What are student rights under FERPA?

FERPA gives eligible students the right to:

  • Inspect and review their education records maintained by NFCC
  • Request that NFCC corrects records which the student believes to be inaccurate or misleading. If NFCC decides not to amend the record, the student has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if NFCC still decides not to amend the record, the student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth the student’s view about the contested information;
  • Have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from their education records and
  • File a complaint with the Department of Education.
